You’ve probably seen bollards outside of some high-security buildings, even if you don’t know what they are called. They are those small posts, made of metal and other heavy duty compounds that are designed to prevent drivers from getting close to a building. You usually see them outside of government buildings, where they line the sidewalk in between the street and the building.
Many have reflectors at the top, making them easy to spot at night. What is about these high-security bollards that make them work so well?
They Provide Some Access, But Not A Lot
The entire point of high-security bollards is to allow people on foot, or even in very specific vehicles, to get close to a building. However, they also prevent larger vehicles from getting near them. This is why you see these high-security bollards in front of places that serve a critical purpose. They appear mainly in front of hospitals, schools, and even banks, on top of the aforementioned government buildings.
If there’s a chance that someone might get upset (or even accidentally) drive into the front of one of those buildings, then the bollards are placed there. They stop that vehicle literally in its tracks. They also prevent terrorism, as vehicles that are loaded with explosives can’t get close enough to the building to inflict any sort of major damage.
How Big Are Security Bollards?
The next time you go looking for high-security bollards, you’ll probably notice that there are several different types. Some of them are 36 inches tall, which others can be as high as 52 inches. These bollards, as we mentioned above, have stripes at the top that call attention to them. With this said, many people just meander past them every day without even thinking about them.
Bollards are created with heavy-duty materials to ensure that they stop vehicles, not crumble when they are run over. Many of them can withstand a whopping 66,000 pounds of force. That’s quite a bit, and it will prevent many domestic terrorist situations.
Some are made from concrete, which is either poured into place with a series of special molds, while others are poured elsewhere and installed. Others consist of steel or any other type of durable metal. Even better, some are made from both materials. The entire point is their overall impact resistance.
Our Security Bollards
Here at Advance Access, we make three different types of high-security bollards. They are called Scimitar Bollards, Scimitar Static Bollards, and Resilience Bollards. Here’s what you need to know about each of them.
Our Scimitar Bollards are black or dark gray in color and have flat tops. They also have a yellow stripe across the top of each and present a very menacing appearance. These bollards can withstand an impact of around 1,800 KJ and are designed for buildings that need to most protection.
They are made of a very heavy-duty material (which we’re not going to give away here, lest people get the wrong idea) and can handle quite a bit of force, as we explained above. If you need the toughest bollards on the market, and some that will definitely prevent any potential issues, then these are the ones for you.
Scimitar Static Bollard
These are the next ones down the line. These high-security bollards are made out of metal on the outside and will definitely make any domestic terrorist think twice before trying to pull something. However, they are actually designed to look rather unintimidating. They still provide all of the necessary protection that your building needs, while not keeping people on foot from coming near.
The overall impact rating of these high-security bollards is PAS 68. That’s enough to provide a good level of protection. Also, note that these don’t have reflective stripes at the top. This is because they have shiny metal exteriors and are quite visible.
Finally, there are resilience bollards. These are the third kind that we offer. They are much less sturdy than the others but still will keep cars at bay. These bollards are black with yellow reflective stripes. Their foundations aren’t as deep as the others, making them easier to install and maintain.
When you have a building that needs some intimidating looking security, but it much less of a target than others, then these are the ones that need. They can stop a vehicle going 64 kph from getting near your structure.
As you can see, there are many types of high-security bollards. These bollards are all designed in order to prevent cars from getting near buildings of any type, although you usually see them around those that contain potential domestic terrorist threats, such as government buildings and schools. They really present a somewhat menacing appearance, while at the same time, blending into the background.
